Attention Economics

Herbert Simon was perhaps the first person to articulate the concept of attention economics when he wrote:
“…in an information-rich world, the wealth of information means a dearth of something else: a scarcity of whatever it is that information consumes. What information consumes is rather obvious: it consumes the attention of its recipients. Hence a wealth of information creates a poverty of attention and a need to allocate that attention efficiently among the overabundance of information sources that might consume it”.
I’m reading a half a dozen books on social networking and crowd dynamics. The point Simon makes is abundantly clear in the world of social networking. MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn and other social networks can become black holes for time and attention.
Most of the books I am reading, recommend having a plan and spending only an hour a day effectively working the plan.
